Government Announces Official Eid-ul-Fitr Holidays for 2026

holidays

The festive season is rapidly approaching, and the joy and excitement in the air are impossible to ignore. After a peaceful and spiritually rewarding month of Ramadan, millions of people are getting ready to celebrate with their friends and family. If you have been waiting to make your travel plans, book your tickets, or just organize family dinners, the wait is finally over. The government has officially announced the public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr, bringing plenty of joy to students, professionals, and government employees alike. Even better, this year’s calendar has perfectly aligned to give the public an extra-long, well-deserved break.

The Official Eid-ul-Fitr Holiday Schedule

According to the latest official notification issued by the Cabinet Division, public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on March 20 and March 21 (Friday and Saturday). These days off are applicable to all public institutions across the country. Whether your specific office or department operates on a five-day working week or a six-day working week, these two days are confirmed as completely closed for official Eid celebrations.

The “Pakistan Day” Bonus: A Four-Day Weekend!

What makes this year’s Eid announcement incredibly special is how it lines up with another major national event. After the official Eid holidays on Friday and Saturday, we have Sunday, March 22, which is the standard weekly day off for most institutions and businesses.

Right after that is Monday, March 23. As many of you already know, March 23 is officially observed as Pakistan Day, a nationwide public holiday that honors the historic Lahore Resolution. Because these dates land right next to each other, government employees and many private-sector workers will get to enjoy a massive four-day continuous break. This extended holiday period is the perfect opportunity to travel to your hometowns, host large family gatherings, or simply relax at home without worrying about rushing back to work.

Moon Sighting Predictions: What Does the Science Say?

While the official holidays have been locked in, the exact day of Eid always depends on the sighting of the new moon. To give citizens a helpful heads-up, the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) recently shared its scientific predictions regarding the Shawwal crescent.

According to their experts, Eid-ul-Fitr is highly likely to fall on Saturday, March 21. They explained that the chances of seeing the new moon on Thursday, March 19, are extremely low. At the time of sunset on March 19, the new moon will only be around 12 hours and 41 minutes old. Furthermore, there will be a very short window—an estimated 28 minutes—between the sunset and the moonset along Pakistan’s coastal belt. These scientific conditions make a Friday Eid highly unlikely.

The Final Authority: Ruet-e-Hilal Committee

Although SUPARCO provides incredibly accurate scientific calculations and useful observations, they do not make the final religious declaration. The commission clearly emphasized that the ultimate decision will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan. This committee remains the sole competent authority responsible for announcing the start of Islamic months. They will hold their traditional meeting, gather credible witness testimonies, verify visual observations from all corners of the country, and officially declare whether Eid-ul-Fitr 1447 AH begins on Friday or Saturday.

How to Prepare for the Extended Break

Since this will be a very busy four-day weekend, it is highly recommended that you start your preparations right away. If you are planning to travel to another city to be with your loved ones, make sure to book your bus, train, or flight tickets immediately. Public transport services are expected to be fully booked due to the long break. Additionally, try to complete your Eid shopping early to avoid the massive crowds that will undoubtedly flood the markets in the final days of Ramadan.

Enjoy this beautiful time with your loved ones, stay safe during your travels, and make the most out of this wonderful extended holiday season!
